Your Monthly Permission Slip: Make Peace With Your Ambition
This month, you have full permission to rethink ambition.
Not the type of ambition that drains you or forces you to compromise yourself to fit in.
Ambition that fuels you, aligns with your values, and lets you define success for yourself.
You'll discover insights from writer-editor Jennifer Romolini, author of Ambition Monster.
Check out this blurb about Jennifer's memoir: "A deeply personal memoir about workaholism, the addictive nature of ambition, and the humbling process of picking yourself up when the world lets you down—an anti-girlboss tale for our times."
Ambition: Friend or Monster?
This month, we sat down with Jennifer Romolini, author of Ambition Monster, to explore the complex relationship many of us have with ambition.
How do you feel about the word "ambition"?
Has your ambition ever taken on a life of its own and become a "monster"?

WISE WORDS
“[the Ambition Monster] is craving. It’s the foundation of an ego’s longing, directed toward achievement and external success,” Jennifer shares. ”It has nothing to do with establishing a good life—it has to do with how your life looks.”
Jennifer’s personal story challenges us to rethink our ambitions. Are they pushing us towards something meaningful, or are they just feeding an unfillable hole?
You will love what Jennifer has to say about ambition.

Practice: Protecting Your Creativity
Here’s a simple practice to help you stay true to your creative self while pursuing your ambitions:
Step 1: Reflect on Your Creative Desires
- Find a quiet space and take a few minutes to reflect. Ask yourself: What creative projects or ideas have been on my mind lately? What excites me creatively? Write down anything that comes to mind, without judgment.
Step 2: Identify Barriers
- Consider what might be holding you back from pursuing these ideas. Is it time, fear of failure, or other commitments? Write down these barriers.
Step 3: Set Boundaries for Your Creativity
- Think about how you can create space for your creativity. This might mean setting aside specific times during the week, saying no to plans, or finding ways to limit distractions. (Looking at you social media 👀)
Step 4: Take Small Steps
- Choose a small, manageable step you can take each week. It could be as simple as dedicating 15 minutes to a project. The key is to start small and be consistent — you can always add on later.
Step 5: Reflect and Adjust
- At the end of each week, take a moment to reflect on how it felt to prioritize your creativity. Did it bring you joy or fulfillment? Were there any challenges? Adjust your approach as needed to continue protecting and prioritizing your creative space.
Remember, creativity isn’t about perfection or productivity—it’s about giving yourself permission to explore, play, and express yourself without the pressure of external success. Because feeding the "ambition monster" comes at a cost.
